What to expect when your pet has an MRI scan

mriAn MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan is similar to an X-ray in that it will provide us with images of the inside of your pet, but it provides more detail and it is safer because it does not use radiation. While an X-ray or an ultrasound scan will show the size and shape of an internal organ or tissue, an MRI scan will show what the inside of the organ or tissue looks like.

MRI scans for dogs are normally reserved for diagnosing problems with the brain and spinal cord and they are sometimes used when more traditional diagnostic techniques cannot determine the extent of a problem or injury.   MRIs are also used for diagnosing problems with bones and joints in dogs.
An MRI scanner uses magnetic fields to create images of the animals’ body. Here, the dog has been placed inside a giant magnet which sends radio waves into the body. When the magnet is turned off, the body releases the radio waves which the analyser uses to make an image of the body.

mriIf your pet is referred for a scan, you will have an appointment with one of our veterinary surgeons on the day of, or the day before, your scan.  A clinical examination is carried out to ensure it is safe for them to undergo an anaesthetic.

Your pet will need to be placed under general anesthesia because it needs to remain perfectly still for the duration of the scan.

The patient will be allowed only water on the day of the scan, and it will need time after the scan to recover.

If you were referred for a scan, your own veterinary surgeon will receive a detailed report in the following few days.  If you are to go on and have treatment for your pet at Gilabbey, we will be happy to discuss that with you at your discharge appointment.
